Accounting and business ethics: an introduction

Ken McPhail, Diane Walters

Despite the enormous impact of Enron on the accounting profession, the general malaise amongst the profession more broadly, and the significant legislative and institutional reforms that have taken place as a result, there are still surprisingly few textbooks on accounting ethics. This concise introductory text takes a broad view of ethics and accounting, taking into account contemporary social trends, such as globalization and terrorism. Rather than delineating codes of professional conduct, this text pushes the reader towards an understanding of the big ethical dilemmas facing the profession and the factors that influence the ways in which accountants frame ethical questions. The book is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on developing thinking about the different kinds of ethical questions that could be posed in relation to accounting. The second part focuses more explicitly on accounting practice, exploring the ethical function of accounting in relation to the market economy, ethics in relation to the accounting profession, and the ethics of the international accounting harmonization project. Accounting and Business Ethics is a compact introduction aimed at both students and practitioners who want to understand more about the ethics of accounting.

Bank Behaviour and Resilience: The Effect of Structures, Institutions and Agents

Caner Bakir

Bank behaviour shapes the fate of national financial systems and national welfare. The global financial crisis (GFC) has reminded us that the nature of bank behaviour is crucial for systemic stability, national output, employment, economic growth and development in any economy. Specifically, financial system resilience and fragility are outcomes which are often the result of bank behaviour. This book offers a typological theory that distinguishes the conditions under which conservative and opportunistic types of bank behaviour may lead to these outcomes

Bank Funding, Financial Instruments and Decision-Making in the Banking Industry

Santiago Carbó Valverde, Pedro Jesús Cuadros Solas, Francisco Rodríguez Fernández

With this book, we aim to enrich the banking and fi nance literature, providing insight into new research topics which are being undertaken in the aftermath of the financial crisis. In this sense, the main purpose of the researches included in this volume is to span all the major research fields in finance and banking. Th is book is divided into diffeerent chapters that cover a selection of some of the most recent research studies on banking and finance. These studies are carried out by a selection of academics from a range of prestigious European universities and research institutions. All these investigations have benefi ted from being discussed during the 2015 Wolpertinger Conference organized by the European Association of University Teachers of Banking and Finance, held in September 2015.

Bank Management

Timothy W. Koch, S. Scott MacDonald

The world of banking has changed dramatically since 2007 when many large financial institutions around the world failed and were bailed out by their central governments. The United States and global economies subsequently fell into recession. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, and household net worth plummeted with the decline in housing and the value of investments. The ongoing recovery continues to be slow and painful for many. Not surprisingly, the reputations of many banks and the banking industry in general have suffered. Yet, if done correctly, banking is a critical driver of economic activity and a noble profession. It involves the processing of payments, accepting deposits and making loans, safekeeping documents and valuable items, providing guarantees and performance bonds, offering cash management, brokerage and insurance services, and providing securities underwriting and market-making services.

Similarly, managers will find each book to be both a useful aide-memoir and a reference source
